Why Blog?

I’m still trying to figure this one out and I suppose a bit of background will help. I work for a software house and the development department that I work in has two main products. One is Forms 10g sitting on an Oracle 10g database and the other uses the same database but has a front-end written using Java, eForms and Hibernate. There’s around about 100 designers, developers, testers and managers in this department and until about 2 years ago our internal processes were from the dark ages! We were requesting leave using a MS Word document and keeping track of schedules in a spreadsheet. We were developing fancy products for our customers, but internally we hadn’t progressed since the 90’s. Then someone mentioned Oracle Application Express, then called HTMLDB and I was asked to look at developing some internal applications.

Although APEX is easy to use, especially for a hardened Oracle developer who already had HTML experience, I’m pretty much on my own here. If I’ve got any problems or queries I turn to the Internet and other people’s experiences. The Oracle forums frustrate me. Often I find other people asking the same question as me with no responses or even worse they reply saying they’ve resolved the issue without saying how!!! And too many times have I seen someone give a reasonable answer only to have someone else say they’re wrong. I don’t claim to be an expert so I’m not even going to attempt to compete in the forums. I think I’m just totally intimidated by the Apex Evangelists who claim to know so much that it’s difficult for others to join in.

As I’ve had to install APEX on 9i and 10g databases in a Windows environment and upgrade them from 2.0 to 2.2, plus install Oracle XE on Windows and redhat Linux and upgrade these to 3.0.1, I think I’ve had a bit of a rough deal with APEX. I now feel I’ve got at least a little bit of both DBA and developer experience to share with other people.

So the theory is, I’ll hit a problem, find a solution and then post it on my blog. Whether it’s interesting or if anyone ever reads it, who knows. But it gives me something to do in my lunch break and that’s all that matters :-)
